Over at St. Lucy's Church in the Bronx lies a famous grotto modeled after a sanctuary in France.
Nearly 3,700 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from Lourdes, France, New Yorkers arrive in a replica spiritual oasis in the Bronx.
Shortly after St. Lucy's church was built, Monsignor Lombardo visited the sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. In 1939, he had it replicated at the parish so that everyone could experience it.
Ever since, people come to collect the water believed by some to have miraculous powers.
Behind the grotto, visitors can climb the 28 stairs made to resemble the steps of Jesus to the Praetorium of Pontius Pilate.
The grotto is open seven days a week from sunup until sundown.
