A shocking incident at the Tanger Outlets in Deer Park has left shoppers rattled and questioning safety measures at the popular retail destination, after a video of a violent brawl surfaced online.
The cellphone video shows two groups of teenagers engaged in a fistfight on Saturday evening. The altercation escalates when one of the teens pulls out what appears to be a knife, prompting a swift response from Suffolk County police officers, who drew their weapons.
Police say the 16-year-old boy holding the knife was arrested. However, as officers subdued him, 18-year-old Jayden DeJesus allegedly kicked the teen in the face while he was handcuffed on the ground. DeJesus then allegedly fought with officers attempting to take him into custody. One officer sustained a wrist injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Authorities confirmed the details of the incident on Tuesday, after News 12 inquired about the video. The incident had not been made public by police prior to the video’s circulation online, leading many in the community to question why the it wasn't reported sooner.
“I think they shouldn’t bring that kind of behavior over here,” said shopper Julie-Rae Antoine. “That’s horrible. Let people enjoy their shopping.”
The 16-year-old has been charged with weapon possession, while DeJesus faces charges including assault on a police officer.
Suffolk County police announced plans to increase patrols and visibility at the Tanger Outlets moving forward.
