Voters will have no choice in many village elections Wednesday due to an overwhelming number of uncontested races.
Out of 95 villages on Long Island, only five have contested mayoral races taking place Wednesday.
Some blame the lack of candidates on the economy as the majority of the available positions are on a volunteer basis.
?There are fewer running, because they don?t have the time to run,? says Hofstra professor Larry Levy. ?The economy is a real problem because a lot of people who might want to spend time in village government have to spend a lot of extra time at their businesses, at their jobs and if they?ve lost their jobs, they?ve got to spend an awful lot of time trying to get one.?
The contested mayoral races taking place Wednesday are in Hempstead, Plandome Manor, Sea Cliff, Westbury and Amityville.
