Video game tournament sells out at Barclays
A video game tournament has been selling out major arenas around the U.S.
More than 20,000 people convened over a two-day period at the Barclays Center last month, paying to see the Overwatch League’s Grand Finals, a first-person shooter team game.
Attendees dressed up like their favorite Overwatch video game characters and watched in anticipation to see who would be the winners of the global esports league with city-based teams.
“We launched this league a year ago, and we knew there are so many incredibly passionate players. We have more than 40 million fans, but to have it happen this quickly...the energy here, pretty unreal,” says John Spector, the director of the Overwatch League.
After three hours of intense gaming, the best in the world was crowned as the London Spitfire defeated the Philadelphia Fusion.
Playing on the league comes with many benefits, including a salary, health care plan, retirement savings plan and housing provided during the season.
