It may not be Veterans Day, but several Long Island organizations are making sure local veterans are prepared for the colder months ahead.
More than 200 veterans gathered Thursday at the Museum of American Armor in Old Bethpage for the annual "Warm Up" coat drive, where they received free winter coats and connected with organizations offering support services.
The event brought smiles, laughter and a sense of community, but one veteran says many continue to face significant challenges, including food insecurity and financial hardship.
"I think a lot of people need something," said veteran Robert Fritsch, of Copiague. "I go to Long Island Cares each week for vegetables. A lot of people are hurting right now."
The coat drive highlighted Long Island's strong support network for veterans. Another veteran says the event serves a dual purpose: providing winter essentials while also raising awareness about the resources available to former service members.
"It's the time of year where you need a coat, but it's not only the need," said Vinnie Morreale. "Veterans aren't always aware of what is available to them."
Long Island Cares said that despite the assistance offered through various organizations, some veterans are reluctant to seek help.
"We want to serve as many veterans that are in need as possible, from the western end of Nassau to the eastern end of Suffolk," said Harrison Smith, of Long Island Cares.
Veterans say a warm winter coat is just the beginning. Their broader mission is ensuring veterans have access to essential resources and a support system they can rely on year-round.
"You need somebody like this," Morreale said. "A group of people who know what's available. That's a godsend."
If you or a veteran you know needs assistance, support is available through several Long Island organizations:
General Need hosts collection and donation drives through the year aimed at collecting essential items for veterans. Their direct contact number is 631-266-1672.
Long Island Cares has a "Veterans Project" that offers Military Appreciation Tuesdays, outreach at hospitals, and connects veterans to other resources they may need.
