A 20-year veteran NYC firefighter from Long Island died Monday after being trapped in the basement of a building while battling a fire in the Bronx.
FDNY Lt. Howard Carpluk, of Yaphank, died at Montefiore Medical Center. His death comes a day after the blaze claimed the life of firefighter rookie Michael Reilly, 25, of Sleepy Hollow, said assistant fire chief of operations Robert Sweeney.
Battalion Chief Thomas Auer, of Holbrook, was also injured in the blaze. He is listed in serious but stable condition. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
