Hundreds of people gathered Tuesday to pay their respects to a Vietnam War veteran from Long Island.
Michael Pagano, 79, died of cancer and didn't have a large support system in the final years of his life.
The veteran community came together to make sure he was properly honored.
Linda Farina Bo Kitco was there representing Blue Star Mothers of America.
She picked up prescriptions for Pagano, provided him with hot meals and helped with laundry.
"I was there for him, and I would just check on him," Bo Kitco says.
Those in attendance say every veteran deserves to be honored on their final day even if there is no family around.
Pagano was laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery.
