A Franklin Square family says the custom conversion van used to transport two disabled sons was stolen from their driveway early Tuesday morning.
Robert Gasperetti, a father of four, says he uses the van to transport two sons who use wheelchairs. Brian Gasperetti, 20, and his 13-year-old brother Dylan both have a rare genetic disorder affecting their central nervous systems.
The Gasperettis say the van is the only vehicle they own that can transport their whole family. It is longer than most accessible vehicles that are designed to just transport a single wheelchair user at a time. It also contained other expensive equipment, including an $1,800 stroller for their youngest son.
In addition to the expense, the Gasperettis say it would take about nine months to get a replacement.
Police are urging anyone with information about the theft to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
