USGS records 24 earthquakes in New Jersey this year

Chances of aftershocks remain this morning following another earthquake in Bergen County, the second in just days.
Tuesday around noon a magnitude 2.7 occurred near Hillsdale, which is likely an aftershock from the magnitude 3.0 near Hasbrouck Heights Saturday night.
And earlier this year near Paramus in January, a magnitude 2.4 was registered.
In total, the USGS recorded 24 earthquakes so far this year, in three clusters. One in Bergen County, the other near Randolph and the third around Tewksbury, likely aftershocks from the magnitude 4.8 earthquake in April of last year.
Near Randolph there were 6 in just 24 hours in July.
According to the USGS website here's the number of earthquakes for recent years.
2025: 24
2024: 234 (majority of those aftershocks from April's M4.8)
2023: none
2022: 3
2021: 1
2020: 3
The USGS is only reporting 4 higher than magnitude 4.5 in the NYC area.
The bedrock in New Jersey is old and hard so the seismic wave can travel farther, making it easier to feel.
