Memorial Day weekend is here and so are the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds who are ready to take off for the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach if the weather cooperates.
After a long stretch of beautiful weather, Mother Nature has decided to throw a curveball into the weekend with showers and storms beginning Friday night and continuing throughout the weekend.
Officials at Jones Beach say right now the show is scheduled as planned but they'll be watching the weather closely.
Dave and Lauren Carroll have parking passes for this year's Jones Beach Air Show, which was canceled last year due to the pandemic. They say it's going to be a real nice return to normality.
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds landed at MacArthur Airport Thursday. The fighter jet squadron, known for its gravity defying maneuvers and tight formations will serve as the grand finale each day.
"We were able to redo the demonstration over this past winter's training season," says Sgt. Kristyne Pierson, of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. "So even the people who saw us in 2019 are going to see new maneuvers, new sequences and new music this year."
Rehearsal for the show is scheduled for Friday, and the show is Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for all three days are sold out with capacity limited to 50%.
"All of the performers have different criteria as to when they can fly, whether it's visibility, whether it's rain, whether it's the winds," says George Gorman, a spokesperson for Long Island state parks. "So there's a lot of different variables we have to take into account."
The Carroll's hope the rain holds out long enough on Saturday for when they have their parking passes.
If the show gets canceled, anyone with a pass will be eligible to receive two free vouchers to use at any state park this summer.
Gorman says it's more likely that the show will be adjusted for the weather as opposed to being completely canceled.
