Stony Brook University police apprehended a man with an air-soft pistol inside the campus library Monday morning.
They say someone saw Yuxuan Wang, 18, of Brooklyn, displaying what appeared to be a gun.
Police say they arrested Wang within four minutes, even though he wasn't threatening anyone.
They say the BB gun looked like a real gun and they didn't want to take any chances.
"It's quite unusual--it really has no explanation," said Stony Brook University Police Chief, Robert Lenahan. "It's a stupid idea and a bad time in a bad climate to do such a thing."
School doesn't officially start until next week but students were still alerted about the incident through an email.
Wang, who is not a student at Stony Brook, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and was issued an appearance ticket to appear at Suffolk County Court at a later date.
