A letter sent to residents in West Hampton Dunes warns that some underground propane tanks in the village may not meet safety codes.

The underground tanks are supposed to be buried 10 feet from houses and 10 feet from property lines. Lots in the village are narrow, however, and dozens of homes may have tanks installed too closely to homes.

The fear is that highly flammable propane could leak inside a home and trigger an explosion.

Both the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office and the New York State Office of the Inspector General are looking into how village officials may have signed off on any homes that had propane tanks not meeting codes.

Longtime West Hampton Dunes Mayor Gary Vegliante did not speak to News 12 Long Island on camera, based on advice from an attorney representing the village.

Vegliante denied any wrongdoing and said that the village will take steps to correct the situation if any tanks were mistakenly approved.

There are about 300 homes in West Hampton Dunes. Officials say as many as 60 of them may have improperly installed propane tanks.
