Two veteran NYC firefighters from Long Island are fighting for their lives after falling through a floor of a burning building while battling a deadly fire in the Bronx.
Lt. Howard Carpluk, of Yaphank, and Battalion Chief Thomas Auer, of Holbrook, were both seriously injured Sunday while fighting the fire at a discount store. Rookie NYC firefighter, 25-year-old Michael Reilly, of Sleepy Hollow, died in the blaze.
Carpluk is listed in very serious condition at a NYC hospital. Auer is in serious but stable condition. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
