They came to Long Island seeking temporary shelter, but a year later some Hurricane Katrina refuges are still here.Shirley George and her good friend Joseph Robertson fled their hometown of New Orleans the day before Katrina hit. Their long journey included stops in a handful of hotels in many states, and ended in Hempstead. News 12 Long Island introduced the pair of pals last year when they still had hopes their Long Island stop was temporary. A recent trip to New Orleans, however, proved otherwise. Both say there is nothing to go back to and have made Long Island their permanent residence. Related Information: Red Cross
