The Transportation Security Administration on Wednesday announced that it may mandate the use of body scanners for some airline passengers.

Dennis Monette is a former Nassau County assistant police chief and is currently a senior research fellow at the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism. He says the screening changes would put the U.S. in line with procedures already in effect in other countries.

In the wake of recent terror attacks such as those in Paris and San Bernardino, California, Monette says the changes are necessary.

However, Sarah Azzara, of Sound Beach, says it is important to ensure privacy and civil liberties are not sacrificed in the name of safety.

The TSA says the advanced imaging technology is safe and complies with all national health standards. The agency says it also protects the privacy of passengers by using a generic outline to identify potential threats, instead of using specific images to identify any single passenger.
