In a speech following his trip to Mexico, Donald Trump laid out his 10-point immigration plan Wednesday night which included "no amnesty" for anyone entering the U.S. illegally.
Trump said, "We will build a great wall along the southern border and Mexico will pay for the wall."
In addition, Trump said there is no path to legal status for millions of undocumented workers. Trump said the only route is to "return home and apply for re-entry."
Trump accepted an invitation to visit with Mexican President Peña Nieto to discuss their relationship moving forward if he were to be elected president. After their meeting, Trump told the media that the two did not discuss who would pay for his proposed wall.
Hours later in a Tweet, President Nieto said, "At the start of the conversation with Donald Trump, I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall."
News 12 Long Island was at the Holtsville immigration office Thursday where thousands of Long Islanders take the oath of citizenship each year. Gaby Andrade, of Islip, says Trump is using stereotypes to paint a bad picture of immigrants.
"That idea that we just don't like the language, that we steal jobs, that we commit crimes here, that's not true," said Andrade. "I've been working since day one and going to college...I'm not the only one, there are so many people out there doing the same."
Trump supporter John Jay Lavalle, the chairman of the Suffolk Republican Party, says his candidate has the right idea on immigration.
"It's a very practical position. It's supported by a vast majority of Americans and it's going to make America better."
