Rep. Lee Zeldin, a prominent ally of President Donald Trump, declared victory in the race for New York's 1st Congressional District Tuesday night.
The Republican incumbent Zeldin is up against political newcomer Nancy Goroff, who was the Stony Brook University chemistry department chair.
Despite Zeldin's declaration, all of the votes have not been counted and the race has not been called. Absentee ballots are also days away from being counted.
Both candidates have fought hard against each other, with Zeldin going after Goroff on gang violence and crime, while Goroff has hit back about his COVID-19 response.
Zeldin has been in government for a decade -- first as a state senator before being elected to Congress six years ago.
Zeldin addressed supporters at his campaign headquarters, thanking his campaign team and Goroff for "fighting the good fight."
Nancy Goroff’s campaign manager issued a statement hours after Zeldin's declaration, saying, "With tens of thousands of ballots left to be opened, we owe it to voters that every single one be counted."
The seat stretches from parts of Smithtown all the way to Montauk.
The 1st District has seen swings -- it went for President Barack Obama in 2012 but favored President Donald Trump in 2016.
