Crews across Long Island spent the day Friday preparing for the first significant snowfall of the season.

The Town of Oyster Bay's Department of Public Works was gearing up with salters and sanders.

The state Department of Transportation says 230 pieces of heavy equipment are ready to be deployed across the Island. The DOT adds that 400 employees are ready to respond on Long Island, and its plows and sanders will be on the roads throughout the day.

Residents are urged to avoid the roads on Saturday so plows and salt trucks can get to work. Residents are reminded to not try to pass plows because it creates a dangerous situation for both drivers.
