A truck driver suspected of being drunk behind the wheel was busted at a police checkpoint Wednesday morning. Police say it wasn?t the first time he had that kind of brush with the law.
Joseph Debatt, 52, of West Islip, was approached by officers during a routine safety check on Sunrise Highway in Patchogue Wednesday. Police say they saw several open bottles of Mike?s Hard Lemonade and smelled alcohol on Debatt?s breath.
Suffolk Police Sgt. Pat Minogue says Debatt failed field sobriety tests and police later determined his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit. Also, they found Debatt has a previous DWI conviction.
Arresting officers say Debatt had a fully valid commercial driver?s license with a hazmat endorsement, which means he is allowed to drive trucks with hazardous materials.
Under state law, one DWI conviction can result in up to a one-year suspension. With two convictions, commercial drivers lose their license for life.
The company Debatt drives for, Crescent Packing Corporation, had no comment about the situation.
