The National Transportation Research Nonprofit recently conducted a study on the impacts of road conditions on your bottom line. The report finds that drivers in the New York City metro region, including Nassau and Suffolk counties, lose $3,755 annually because of higher vehicle operating costs, traffic crashes and congestion-related delays.

Analysts say all these road-related issues are costing drivers in more ways than one.

"The average commuter is spending an additional 99 hours annually stuck in traffic due to traffic congestion and wasting 31 gallons of fuel," TRIP Director of Policy and Research Rocky Moretti said.

Jason Jerome, the co-owner and shop manager of Plainview Auto Care, said preventative maintenance can go a long way to keeping down costs associated with the region's challenges on the roads.

"Any lights come on your dashboard, bring it in, let a professional look at it so it doesn't cost you money down the road," he said.
