Opening arguments were delivered Tuesday in the trial of a Hempstead man charged with murdering a teen with a machete over a dice game.
David Sadler was arrested in July 2014.
Prosecutors said the 46-year-old attacked and killed 17-year-old Terrance Grier Jr., known as TJ, after losing money to him in a street dice game in Hempstead. During opening arguments, the prosecutor said Sadler was motivated by revenge when he went to his car, grabbed a machete and struck him in the neck.
The victim's mother Greta Price told the jury that she saw her son die in the street.
"My son didn't deserve to die this way," said Price.
During the defense's opening argument, attorney Brian Carmody said this wasn't about revenge, but self-defense.
"He won, they then beat him and robbed him, took his money, and he was resisting the robbery continuously when he swung the machete," said Carmody.
Sadler is charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
