One person was killed after a train carrying Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Lee Zeldin, slammed into a garbage truck Wednesday.
The crash happened about 15 miles outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. Officials say one person who was in the truck was killed. Two lawmakers were taken to the hospital to be checked out.
Rep. Zeldin says the lawmakers and their families were heading to a retreat in West Virginia at the time of the incident. Investigators say they are still trying to piece together what exactly happened.
"The very first moment, I'm sure everyone was asking themselves, ‘What the heck just happened?’" said Rep. Zeldin. "There was clearly something bad happening."
The Suffolk congressman said it was a “pretty big collision.”
“It was just amazing to watch our police, our first responders do what they're trained to do and move so quickly. It was impressive, but no surprise," says Zeldin.
President Donald Trump offered his thoughts and prayers to those involved.
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, who was also on board, called the incident “a terrible tragedy.”
Rep. Zeldin said that many of his colleagues had their spouses and children on board the train.
