Traffic engineers with the Suffolk County Department of Public Works presented a new idea to reduce congestion on County Road 39 in Southampton: an elevated express roadway.
The futuristic-looking elevated roadway would be in addition to the current four-lane road that serves as the main artery in the Hamptons.
The travel lanes could be reversed for morning and evening rush hours.
Traffic congestion has been an ongoing, and growing problem on County Road 39. Department of Public Works engineers presented preliminary findings of a traffic study.
Other proposed solutions included the construction of a new roadway near the LIRR tracks and village bypass routes.
County officials say the goal is to ease congestion, improve safety and prevent drivers from using side streets and short cuts.
The county will continue to collect information and hold more community meetings into next year.
