An overturned tractor-trailer brought traffic to a grinding halt Sunday on William Floyd Parkway and caused a health scare.
Suffolk police believe the truck may have been going too fast as it came off the Long Island Expressway onto the parkway in Yaphank. The vehicle turned on its side, trapping driver Stevie Williamson, of East Patchogue, and causing some bags containing asbestos to rip open.
Firefighters say the driver was transporting debris from a Bronx school. "There is some wood in there with asbestos to it, but it's all bagged and double-bagged and some of the bags ripped open," said Ridge Fire Department Chief John DeVito. However, DeVito maintains none of the contents spilled onto the road.
Williamson, who had to be rescued from the tractor-trailer, was flown to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police have not issued any tickets in the accident.
