Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead are battling over speed limit signs near Cow Meadow Marina in Freeport.
Boat owners say the wakes from speeding boats have caused extensive damage by bashing boats into the bulkheads. Robert Kennedy, who runs the marina, says he repeatedly asked the Town of Hempstead to put up ?no wake? signs. He says the town blew him off, but Nassau County officials took the initiative and put up five-miles-an-hour speed limit signs a few weeks ago.
Kennedy says he was outraged after town workers were caught on tape ripping down the signs Thursday. Town of Hempstead spokesman Mike Deery says the town cannot allow people to put up signs where it wants. Deery says the town will put up its own authorized signage.
