The Town of Brookhaven has revealed a new eco-friendly way to pave the streets.
The new paving contract uses a product known as Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA). Officials say WMA has been used for over a decade and has made its way to more than 40 states in the US due to its benefits.
The Brookhaven Highway Department is the first municipality on Long Island to use WMA on a complete project.
Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro says the project will result in fewer potholes and a reduction in emissions.
While some national studies are wary of the new paving method, AAA's Robert Sinclair believes motorists should give it a chance.
"We've got some tough infrastructure problems in our area and hopefully this will be a way to catch up and improve pavement quality," says Sinclair.
The new asphalt is just being used on some Brookhaven roads. If all goes well, the town plans to expand the program.
