The Town of Huntington announced Tuesday that it has served notice to seven Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders illegally living near schools, parks or day care centers that they must move or face stiff financial penalties.
Town Councilman Stuart Besen said the town?s monthly check of the state Department of Criminal Justice Services? Web site found that the sex offenders were violating a year-old law he sponsored prohibiting them from living within 1,320 feet of sensitive areas.
One of the offenders, who had been living at 78 Norton Dr. in Huntington Station, near Birchwood Intermediate School, has already left the state and has registered as a sex offender in Pennsylvania, Besen said.
Six others in Huntington Station were sent notices on March 3 that they have 45 days to move out. Two live near Manor Fields. Woodhull Intermediate School, Jefferson Primary School, Manor Plains Nature Park and Columbia Street Park each have an offender violating the legal boundary around their areas.
"If they don't move them out we're gonna give the homeowners a summons and them a summons and the fines can range up to $2,500 per week," Besen said at a Town Hall press conference Tuesday morning.
