Hundreds of Long Islanders kicked off their holidays at one of Nassau's most historic sites.

The "Christmas with the Roosevelts" event was held at Sagamore Hill, the sprawling property that President Theodore Roosevelt called home. This is the first holiday season since 2011 the home was open to visitors.

The event featured carolers, crafts and a speech by a T.R. impersonator. The biggest draw was the tours that were given of Roosevelt's recently renovated, 23-room mansion in Oyster Bay.

Park rangers say nearly 800 people were on hand, marking the biggest turnout ever for the annual event.

Roosevelt lived at Sagamore Hill until he died in 1919. The property is now a national park and museum. It is open daily Wednesday through Sunday for visitors throughout the year and holiday season.
