With the prestigious Ryder Cup set to bring tens of thousands of visitors to Bethpage State Park later this month, security preparations are ramping up—especially in light of the recent assassination of political commentator Charlie Kirk.
Law enforcement officials say they are planning for both visible and unseen layers of protection as they brace for the high-profile international golf tournament, which is expected to draw 50,000 people each day.
Adding to the spotlight is that President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend on Friday of the event.
“We don’t wait for these incidents,” said New York State Police Maj. Steve Udice during a public meeting Wednesday night at Farmingdale Village Hall. “We have intelligence units who are constantly monitoring social media. You’re going to see a heavy uniformed presence—but what you’re not going to see is the heavy non-uniformed presence.”
The forum, which drew a standing-room-only crowd, focused primarily on how the tournament will disrupt local traffic, with several key road closures planned before and during the Ryder Cup.
Among the biggest disruptions is that a key portion of Round Swamp Road, which cuts directly through the course, will be fully closed for the entire week of the tournament.
Other roadways, including Quaker Meeting House Road and Clubhouse Road, will have closures during the event.
Commuters are already feeling the impact. Matt Kruger, of Farmingdale, voiced frustration at the meeting, noting that Long Island Rail Road parking lots will be closed to the public.
“They put a note on our cars telling us to work remote,” Kruger said. “Not everybody has the opportunity to do that. So what are we supposed to do?”
Udice acknowledged the inconvenience but emphasized that public safety is the top priority.
“We recognize this is going to be an interruption to the local community,” he said. “We will be required to close some roads in order to keep people safe—both pedestrians and those on the course.” Key Road Closures: Round Swamp Road (Winding Rd to Quaker Meeting House Road) Sept. 15: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Sept. 16: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Sept. 20–21: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Fully closed Sept. 22 (9 a.m.) to Sept. 29 (6 a.m.) Quaker Meeting House Road Closed daily Sept. 22–29, from 4:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. Clubhouse Road (Bethpage State Parkway access) Rideshare only from Sept. 23–29, 5 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily
