Three more dolphins stranded off the shore of Sag Harbor died overnight, bringing the death toll to nine Friday.
About 20 dolphins entered Northwest Creek late last week and were unable to leave on their own. The only escape route is a narrow inlet, which the sea mammals are reluctant to navigate because of its depth. The shallow water there makes dolphins believe the inlet is a beach, so they turn away.
On Tuesday, marine biologists herded nine of the creatures to safety. Subsequent efforts have not been successful. Nine have been found dead. Rescuers say the last, slim hope for the remaining dolphins is to become beached. They could then lift and treat the animals, but low food supplies and stress mean time is running out.
