Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials have rounded up 30 of illegal immigrants suspected of criminal activity as part of a nationwide sweep.
Thousands of illegal immigrants are expected to be deported as part of the three-week "Operation Return to Sender," which targets immigrants who have participated in illegal activities. Suffolk officials say 14 of the 19 immigrants nabbed in the county were sex offenders and two more were gang members. The other three, they say, were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Immigrant advocates say they are afraid innocent immigrants will be nabbed as well as criminals. Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy says he is making no apologies. He says the operation is removing those who are in the country illegally, regardless of any other laws they are breaking.
