Johnson & Johnson is recalling five of its sunscreen products after some samples were found to contain low levels of benzene, a chemical that can cause cancer with repeated exposure.
The affected products are:
Neutrogena Beach Defense
Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport
Neutrogena Invisible Daily
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer
Aveeno Protect + Refresh
Dermatologist Michael Dannenberg says anyone who was exposed is likely at minimal risk but to be safe the product should be thrown out.
It was back in May that Valisure, an online pharmacy petitioned the FDA to recall 40 batches of sunscreens and after-sun products it says tested for high levels of the chemical benzene. The company tested 294 batches from 69 companies and found benzene in 27% of them. Johnson & Johnson is the only company so far to come out and recall its products.
