Some Long Island congressional representatives have joined the calls for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign in the wake of three women coming forward and accusing him of sexual harassment.
The New York Times published a story Monday night in which a woman, named Anna Ruch, claims that Cuomo put his hands on her bare lower back, then grabbed her face and asked if he could kiss her. The claim comes after two former aides, Lindsey Boylan and Charlotte Bennett, came forward with claims of sexual harassment from the governor.
Democratic Rep. Kathleen Rice made her stance on Cuomo's future clear Monday night, tweeting after learning about the governor's third reported allegation, "The time has come. The governor must resign."
Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin also released a statement, beginning with, "When it rains, it pours." He goes on to say, "Andrew Cuomo has abused the powers given to him by the people of New York and disgraced the governor's office. It's time to take back that power, it's time to save our state and it's up to every New Yorker to hold him accountable."
News 12 spoke to Long Island residents for their thoughts about the accusations. While nearly all people said the allegations should be investigated, some say the investigation must be carried out before a determination is made.
Cynthia, who lives in Smithtown, says if the attorney general finds that Cuomo is guilty of sexual harassment, she says he should step down.
"I'm not a Republican, so I'm not on a witch hunt against him, but I'm a woman and these you know, these allegations have to be taken seriously," she says. "And we have to be consistent if we expect certain things from Republicans, we should expect them from Democrats."
Darlene, also of Smithtown, says the allegations must be proven first.
"It has to be proven that he's guilty before a determination is made," she says.
Not everyone News 12 spoke to was willing to give Cuomo the benefit of the doubt.
"The allegations that are being made against you right now, the Lord is bringing it on you my friend," says Cindy, another Long Island resident. "Because you are evil, evil, evil. I prayed for you, I got on my knees for you, and you did not repent. God bless you."
