Renting a car for a vacation can run into the hundreds. News 12's consumer reporter Janice Lieberman gives us The Real Deal on how to get the most mileage for your money.

DON’T PREPAY

You scour the travel sites to get the best deal. First rule - don't prepay. You want to be able to cancel.

SET YOUR CALENDAR

Book your car rental as soon as you make your plans, and then recheck it once a week and rebook it whenever the price goes down.

CONSIDER OFF-AIRPORT

Check off airport agencies. You can save upward of 10%. Even airport cars usually require a shuttle.

DON'T PREPAY FOR GAS

When you fill up yourself, you can make sure you get it to the line exactly how you want to do it.

CHECK INSURANCE COVERAGE

Consider taking a pass on insurance. Often, your credit card insurance has a better policy.

CHECK CAR DEALERS

Many car dealers will rent cars for much less per day. You can even try to negotiate the price. But you will have to pay for insurance and the hours may not be as convenient as an agency.
