It's back to school, but it's not only supplies that are going to cost you.

It's all the activities after school that can run up big bills.

News 12's consumer reporter Janice Lieberman has some money saving tips to keep those costs down.

A recent survey found that 79% of parents have gone into debt in order to keep their children involved in sports and other competitive activities. Some sports teams can run parents into the thousands for just one child, but the answer could be in your backyard.

How can you save on equipment? Hand me downs are always welcome.

Check your area for stores like Play It Again Sports, or Score Consignments where they sell used sporting goods at discounted prices, or online sites like SidelineSwap.

If you have to buy new equipment, check with your local sporting goods store to see if they offer coupons or discounts to town residents, or to local clubs like Little League.

For children not enrolled in school yet, check to see if your town has any free or discounted trial classes for activities.

Ask friends with similar aged children to join in a backyard activity where you can split the cost.

Check Facebook Marketplace for used equipment, instruments or gear that could help offset the cost.
