Gas prices continue to climb across the region, leaving many drivers looking for relief wherever they can find it.
As of Tuesday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas on Long Island was $3.89, which was up $1.03 from this time last month.
The national average just hit an average of $4 per gallon on Tuesday.
“I automatically look at gas prices so I know where the best place to go is," says Hicksville resident Stephen Lemmerman.
Experts say one of the simplest ways to cut costs is by downloading gas‑station apps and signing up for rewards programs. Robert Sinclair Jr., spokesperson for AAA Northeast, says the savings can add up quickly.
“It’s going to be the responsibility of the driver to investigate these things but it may be worth their while," he says. “Three to 20 cents per gallon is going to make a big difference, considering that we’re probably a dollar higher than where we were just about a month ago."
News 12 looked into several options available to drivers.
Many major gas stations now offer apps that provide discounts ranging from just a few pennies per gallon to a few dollars.
Membership‑based retailers like Costco, BJ’s, and Sam’s Club also offer lower fuel prices to their members.
Stop & Shop customers can save 10 cents per gallon by redeeming 100 rewards points at participating Stop & Shop and Shell stations.
“I use Stop & Shop rewards and I use 7‑Eleven Rewards,” says Lemmerman. “They help a lot. It seems like only pennies but it’s a lot.”
Drivers who haven’t signed up yet say they’re now considering it.
"It's more money in my pocket," says Plainview resident Mark Geier.
AAA says there's also things you can do while driving and maintaining your car that can save you money.
  • Don't drive around looking for the cheapest gas station.
  • Make sure your vehicle is in optimum running condition.
  • Make sure your tire pressure is normal. AAA says when tires are underinflated, it creates extra rolling resistance and the engine has to work harder to propel the vehicle through that extra rolling resistance.
  • Slow down when driving.
