A banned chemical was found in a woman's well water in Manorville.

Clare Bennett says she and her husband decided to get their well water tested in November after living in Manorville for the past 20 years.

The Suffolk County Health Department found Bennett's well water had more than 100 parts per billion of MBTE, a gasoline additive that was banned back in 2004. The acceptable limit for drinking water is 10 parts per billion, according to officials.

Suffolk County officials and the state DEC say they are trying to find out how the chemical got into the Pine Barrens well.

Dick Amper, who heads the Pine Barrens Society, says the source must be found.

"It could be very localized, something that happened on a piece of property, a big gasoline spill or it could be a remnant of something that was done at the Grumman site or Brookhaven Laboratory," says Amper.

The DEC says it will be checking other wells in the neighborhood and hopes to have some answers in a few months.

For now, Bennett and her husband can only use bottled water.
