Long Island University fired five resident advisors from the C. W. Post campus Thursday for recording a video that spoofed Islamic terrorist kidnappings.
Students who saw the video say it featured men, with stereotypical Middle Eastern accents, holding a rubber duck hostage and demanding an iPod Nano and baked goods as ransom. The resident advisors, who worked at Post's Brookville Hall, posted the video briefly on the Web site YouTube before taking it down. Although fellow students believe reactions to what was intended as a joke are being blown out of proportion, officials at the Islamic Center of Long Island in Westbury think otherwise. They say the video reinforces the stereotype that every Muslim is a terrorist, which is a dangerous and inaccurate label.
The resident advisors are scheduled to appear at a disciplinary hearing in the coming weeks. According to the provost, all five will at least perform community service.
