A Lindenhurst man sprang into action after teenagers fell through the ice on a frigid pond.
An adventurous walk on a frozen pond nearly ended in tragedy for James Rizos and three of his friends. Rizos fell in the water, and was followed by his friend, Aidan Dileo. It happened late Sunday afternoon, when the water was about 10 degrees.
Brian Reilly saw the whole thing happen from the bay window of his home on Gary Street in Lindenhurst. He alerted his father, Jerry, who then went down to his garage, grabbed a 150-foot extension cord and ran to the pond to help the boys.
The elder Reilly says that two of the boys were still in the water upon arrival, and threw the cord to pull them ashore.
Alex Genovese, who happened to be walking by at the time, joined the rescue effort by running onto the ice to chop a path for the boys to get to the other side.
On Monday, the boys were able to thank their saviors.
