Firefighters battle massive flames at Bay Shore scrapyard

Multiple local fire departments fought strong nor’easter winds when battling a blaze at a scrapyard in Suffolk County Sunday afternoon.
The Bay Shore Fire Department was first alerted to the report of multiple vehicles on fire around 12:45 p.m. at NJC Scrap Metal Recycling, located on Moffitt Boulevard in Bay Shore.
Minutes later, Chief of Department, John Ippolito Jr., was advised that a large column of smoke was visible from Sunrise Highway and Brook Avenue.
Once on scene, crews forced entry onto the property and began an aggressive attack with hand lines while additional units set up master stream operations, fire officials say.
The volunteer firefighters worked for over three hours to contain the wind-driven flames, amid the continued nor’easter rain.
The fire was placed under control at approximately 3:30 p.m. with no injuries reported, according to the Bay Shore Fire Department.
There were delays on the LIRR Montauk branch as a result, with the location being adjacent to the train tracks.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
