A Brentwood teen left with life-long injuries after being hit by a car is planning to participate in the 5K portion of the Catholic Health Services Suffolk County Marathon.
Donovan Maldonado, 16, was struck by a car while walking home from school in Jan. 2016. The incident left him with broken bones, a ruptured spleen and a traumatic brain injuries.
Donovan's mother, Laura Garces, said the driver who hit her son was not charged. Authorities ruled it an accident.
Maldonado went through multiple surgeries and will mostly likely need physical therapy for the rest of his life.
Joined by family, friends, county and school officials, Maldonado ran his first lap around the track Thursday at Brentwood High School.
"I do it to show people that just because you've been struck, doesn't mean you should stop," he said.
Garces said she is confident her son will be able to do much more in the future.
"We know that he's a strong kid and he's been through so much and overcome so much, we know that it's only a matter of time," she said.
Brentwood Schools Superintendent Richard Loeschner says Maldonado is an inspiration for the entire student body.
"He brings a smile to our face every single day, and it really has been a moment for us to stop and reflect about all of our blessings," said Loeschner.
The race is scheduled for Oct. 28.
