Police in Suffolk are looking for leads after a 13-year-old boy was shot in the head Monday night while playing basketball in Brentwood.
Investigators say Wilson Batista Jr. and his friends were on a court at Timberline Park when shots were fired in their direction. Batista was hit in the head and taken to Southside Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was later transferred to Schneider Children?s Hospital.
Batista is listed in extremely critical condition and underwent four hours of surgery. The boy?s father spoke exclusively to News 12 Long Island and said he is devastated by the shooting.
Police say they don?t have enough information to conclude whether the incident is gang-related. No arrests have been made.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS or the homicide detectives at 631-852-6392. Police say they?re willing to offer a reward of up to $5,000.
