A 14-year-old girl is dead and four others wounded after a car crash in Selden.Officials say the accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday on Mooney Pond Road near Adirondack Drive when a 1997 Chrysler Sebring, driven by 18-year-old Marco Diaz, ran a stop sign and collided with a Chevy Blazer, driven by 25-year-old Joseph Wakeford.
Following the accident, Suffolk County Police Officer Frank Saracino and resident Randy Caparco jumped in and pulled four people from the Sebring. Alora Williams, of Centereach, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other occupants of the Sebring, 14-year-old Julian Coppola and 15-year-old Danielle Alotta, were taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment. Coppola suffered from a head laceration and non-life threatening internal injuries. Alotta was treated for serious head and body trauma.
The two drivers were also treated at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Wakeford was treated for a head laceration and Diaz for a head laceration and back pain.
Police say it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. They also say Williams was not wearing a seatbelt when she was ejected from the car.
A woman who lives on the street says there have been numerous accidents on the road, but requests for a traffic light have been rejected.
