A 17-year-old boy was mowed down by a hit-and-run driver and left to die on the street outside Dairy Barn in Huntington Village Friday night.
?I just talked to his mother, she said that they're going to take the tubes out of him because he had a collapsed lung,? says Dana Nelson, the aunt of the victim, Daniel Herion.
Police say the incident happened at 11 p.m., when a group of eight teenagers had just left a movie theater on Wall Street. As they were walking across a driveway, one of the teens accused the driver of the Sport Utility Vehicle of almost hitting him while exiting the Dairy Barn. That remark sparked a heated argument.
Dairy Barn cashier Liz Ortiz saw the argument spiral out of control.
?They crowded around the side of the car,? Ortiz says, ?and they started talking to the kids, and then I guess one of them said the wrong thing and he backed up over the curb right into the group of kids.?
Police say the SUV hit four of the teens and sped away. Three of the victims suffered minor injuries.
Herion was rushed to Schneider's Children?s Hospital with serious head injuries. Police are looking for a black SUV, possibly a Jeep Liberty or Cherokee. They say three white males were inside the vehicle. Nelson hopes they catch them.
Anyone with information about the SUV or its occupants is asked to call Suffolk Crimestoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
