The Medford teen accused of spearheading the November stabbing attack of an immigrant in Patchogue pleaded not guilty to new charges Monday.
Jeffrey Conroy, 17, the alleged ringleader in the fatal attack on Marcelo Lucero, was charged in attacks against other Hispanic men. Prosecutors say the teens? actions were part of a pattern of violence against Hispanics.
The county says in a June incident, Conroy and several of his friends attacked immigrant Robert Zumba. They say the attack was similar to the one that allegedly ended Lucero?s life. Conroy's attorney William Kehon questions the validity of the stories of the men allegedly attacked by the teens.
?I will look forward to what their proof is in court,? Kehon says. ?I promise you this. Jeff Conroy is guilty of nothing.?
Seven teens in all have been charged in Lucero?s death. They are all also facing charges stemming from other incidents, to which five of them pleaded not guilty last week. All seven previously pleaded not guilty to hate crime charges in Lucero?s death.
The final defendant, Kevin Shea, who allegedly went on rampages with Conroy, has yet to be indicted on the new charges. He is due in court on Tuesday.
Prosecutors say Conroy faces 54 more years behind bars if found guilty of the new charges. Conroy continues to be held without bail.
