Students who are members of Syosset High School's Interact Club kicked off their annual fundraiser for Gift of Life International.
Gift of Life provides lifesaving surgeries for children across the globe who are born with deadly heart defects. The students are attempting to raise $35,000 to help save seven lives on all seven continents.
"This is a moment of impact," said Robbie Donno, of Gift of Life. "It raises the bar. It shows other people what the possibilities are."
In the past, the student club has sponsored surgeries for one or two children at a time. They have helped raise money for surgeries for 30 children.
The students have until May to raise the money. They are planning bake sales, skating events and bowl-a-thons over the course of the school year.
Gift of Life International has funded 17,000 heart surgeries over the past 39 years.
