A World War II veteran who died in April at the age of 99 was honored in Syosset for all that he did in the war and for his community.
Gus Scutari fought in the Pacific Theater during the war. Around town, he was best known for organizing the Syosset Memorial Day Parade, a patriotic duty that he cherished for nearly three decades. His efforts earned him the nickname "Mr. Memorial Day."
A portion of Underhill Boulevard will now forever bare his name and will be known as Gus Scutari Way.
"On the eve of Independence Day, we are reminded of the life and contributions of Gus Scutari, one of the greatest men I've ever had the privilege of knowing," says Leg. Joshua Lafazan.
A plaque with Scutari's name is now displayed at the plaza where the Memorial Day parade always ended.
Scutari's grandson, Justin Zorbo, is a 16-year FDNY veteran. Zorbo says he's proud that his grandfather's name and legacy will live on forever.
"I hope he's remembered for who he was – a very down to Earth man, a genuine man, a man who loved his country, loved this community and clearly dedicated his life to those beliefs," says Zorbo.
Gus Scutari Way stretches from Queens Street to Jackson Avenue in the heart of Syosset.
