A suspicious package that appeared to be a pipe bomb now seems to be a non-explosive training device used by a government agency, police say.

Suffolk police say they received a call around 10 a.m. reporting what appeared to be a pipe bomb at a Commack car wash on Jericho Turnpike.

A worker who was detailing the car opened the trunk and found a Rubbermaid box containing flares wrapped with tape and wires. Concerned, he called 911.

When police arrived, an officer prepared to disarm a bomb determined the package was safe. Police say it was a training device from a government agency, though they are unsure which agency.

The package is said to have been left in the car by accident. The vehicle is reportedly being sold, and had been brought in for detailing.
