The Suffolk County Police Hate Crimes Unit is searching for the suspects who stole two wise men from a nativity scene in St. James.

The nativity scene was set up by the Saint James Chamber of Commerce on Route 25A and Lake Avenue.

Officials say the figurines were stolen sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon. The figurines that were stolen reportedly represent the gifts of gold and frankincense.

Suffolk police have classified the theft as a hate crime because the nativity scene is a religious symbol for the Christian faith.

Police are offering a reward up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Anyone with information can call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS
