A suspect arrested for shooting a 53-year-old man in Bay Shore pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.
Suffolk police say they responded to a call on Hecksher Avenue Thursday about a shooting on Hemlock Drive. Police say 36-year-old Nireair Jefferson shot the victim and fled the scene. The victim was critically injured.
Jefferson was later apprehended by authorities. He was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
The prosecution said Jefferson has an extensive criminal record and has several felony convictions for gun possession.
Jefferson is being held without bail. He is due back in criminal court on Nov. 21.
Authorities say they are still investigating the motive and whether the shooting was random or targeted.
